Monday, Monday

Lord what a day we had yesterday. Johnny (he of the swollen gums and fat face) and I were at the dentists office by 8 AM. By 8:45 we were on our way to see a peridontist is Salisbury. At 1:00 we walked out of that office $271 poorer with a prescription in hand. I didn't even want to think what that would cost. It seems the combination of a molar coming in and braces shoved up against his gums caused them to swell (and I mean swell) and then bacteria was getting caught in their depths (?) which caused infection and more swelling. At least that's what I made of all they were telling me. There is an orthodontist out there who I need to talk to today.

Anyway I want to tell you this about my sweet fat cheeked Johnny. (Sorry but Mama has to brag.) We stopped to get the prescription filled and outside of the store was the bell ringer with his red bucket. Without saying a word to me Johnny walked right up and put money in the bucket. His own money. My son.

They announced on the radio his teams win at the lacrosse tournament in Fairfax Virginia. The child played 7 games that day with his swollen gums. It was a U15 team and his team is made up of mostly younger kids (13) so they played bigger guys and still won. Unfortunately I wasn't there. I have heard he played really well. He plays in another tournament the day after Thanksgiving I think in New Jersey. And today (this is it I swear) he is going to school long enough to go to band practice (drummer) and take a Social Studies test he missed yesterday EVEN THOUGH he still has a fat swollen face. Ain't life grand?

I am so happy that I do not have problems with my teeth. That sounded horrible. I hope he gets to feeling better quickly.

My wife works for the VA and she is in the dental arena and she tells me some very horrifying stories! I shudder and she damn well knows it! :>)

I hope all turns out for the best and you do not need to mortagage your house.

Peace.

Dentist woes, we have them here big time. I get my dental care at the VA as a Veteran, but the clinic is 200 miles away. When I had a toorhache not long ago, I went to the Veterans service officer and asked if i can go to a local dentist for care. He said yes, if it is an emergency.

So, I call four dental offices and none of them would even look at me, even after I told them I was in extreme pain. I medicated that night with a ton of Advil, then drove the 200 miles in the morning so I could wait at the VA all afternoon because I didn;t have an appointment. They pulled the tooth.

Another friend here at home has lived here and had the same dentist since 1978. The dentist retired and when he called the office to make a routine appointment, they told him that they aren't taking any new clients, and since Doctor so-and-so was gone, he'd be a new client.

Anyway, Ashland Wisconsin has a shortage of dentists.

Have a great and wonderful Thanksgiving. Peace to you and your family. Prayers for your son and all the troops all over the world.

Diva-Great kid definitely.

Blue- I'm glad you don't either! I hope it stays that way for you too.

Poetryman- I have my own horror stories as I have eaten a steering wheel once but I try not to recollect that episode.

Spado- It is really sad how poorly they treat us sometimes isn't it. We have used several dentists in this area and I think we've found one that we can settle with but I do keep looking at him and thinking he will be retiring soon.

What a good kid - having a sore mouth is horrible! I had braces when I was 11, and my gums were always inflamed. My teeth are still crooked, too, dammit.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm off to brine a turkey this morning.

Seems we can't win

They stopped 'free' dentistry because dentist were carrying out work that didn't need doing just to bill the state.

So now we have private dentistry which is still subsidised by the state -
yet they only treat those who can pay, and boy do they know how to charge.

Mind you if anything goes wrong with your car at the mechanics you have some chance of getting the Consumer association on to them - and in the worst case scenario, you can get another garage to repair the damage done by the first garage.

But dentistry is self-regulated, which means it is not policed and not accountable.

Why are you paying $271 dollars for a problem caused by braces - because swollen faced johnny didn't brush his teeth?

Theoretically if we all brushed our teeth, we'd have no need for dentists. But as far as I'm aware the only people genuinely happy with their dentist or dentistry is those who don't need them.

Yep, I can assume heart surgery is great if I don't use
I can assume cancer treatment is great, if I never use it
I can assume hip surgery is great if I never have to use it.

But I can tell you dentistry leaves a lot to be desired. They 3ant to charge jewellers prices, yet you wouldn't buy any jewels from them.

To be honest you wouldn't let them near your car, your tv or your washing machine - yet you are expected to place your trust and pearls in their hands.
And do they ever listen to the patient, do they let the patient talk - no, straight in with the needle and the cotton wool - shut up and pick up the bill on thw way out. Even dogs get treated more humanelyat the vets.

Bluegrrrrl- Thank you. Peaceful maybe impossible w/so much family around but here's hoping! Enjoy your Thanksgiving too!

Lukku- Have fun brining and have a happy Thanksgiving.

Quasar- Great rant! Johnny did brush and your right (my husband would definitely agree) that we shouldn't have to pay. Rather the orthodontist who shove those bands right up on his gum line should. But we will be talking to him next week...
Happy Thanksgiving Quasar. Will you be celebrating by any chance?

Just wanted to say happy Thanksgiving, and pat you on the back for raising a nice guy!

My son has been desperate to play a sport, hes not quite old enough. I can tell already though that he will be the type to play hard. And end up with old injuries like his daddy! Ah, sports!

Hope he feels better. Enjoy the day.
