Near perfect weekend

Saturday morning I got Johnny to the beach at 7 A.M for his first surf contest. It was for beginners and kids who had never placed before. His friend finally talked him into to trying a competion. He didn't think he was good enough.

When I first got there it was windy and a little on the chilly side but the sun was shining. Johnny entered the short and longboard contest. They also had boogie board and then some opens for more experienced surfers. LONG DAY! Johnny's heats were hours apart.

He got first place in the first heat of both long and short board. That was a nice little boost. I have no idea how they judge. It seems very subjective. When the finals FINALLY came he ended up w/3rd place in both long and short. Not bad. He was one of oldest in his age group. Some of these little kids blew me away.

Lots of prizes given out during the day, tons of friends, and really beautiful weather. Michael even called right after Johnny's first two heats so I got to tell him how well Johnny was doing. He was stoked to hear Johnny was trying competion and placing and of course it really made MY day to hear from Michael.

The day ended at about 7:30 so we all were pretty exhausted and went to bed very early. The boys were back on the beach at 7 A.M next day! I met them a little later with John and we enjoyed another gorgeous day.

Congrats to your son. I was a surfer when I was young but I never got into competition. I wish I had.

Since a bad day at the beach is better than a good day at work, I'm not sure what level of awesome your "good day" becomes, but it sure looks like a great time.

Hi Mary, I just came from Greg's blog. I lived my first 47 years in Maryland - and oh, how I miss Ocean City and the Delaware beaches. I haven't been to Ocean City in three years.

Greg- The competition was fun but I know a lot of surfers who just don't get into it. Someday I am going to get on a board.

Babzy- Yay!

Donnie-Pretty damn lucky.

Mary- OC is growing fast. It makes me sad. It seems to be the way it is no matter where you live.

I used to watch those surfing shows on TV when I was young, and wish I could do that, but Michigan wasn't surfer's paradise!:) Now, I'm nearby the ocean, but a bit old, I fear.:) Congratulations to Johnny!!

Oh Mary, what fantastic photo's, and how wonderful to live not only near to the beach, but to one that is actually WARM enough to enjoy!

Your boy did well, didn't he?

Quasar- No argument from me!

WT- How could you quit? I can see how it would be addictive.

TUA- I watch them now and I'm mesmerized. And they do surf on one of those lakes. I think I remember seeing they get towed into the wake of big ships. Does that sound right?

La Bellina- Unfortunately we could use some rain here.

Cream- He's a natural athlete so I'm sure he will conquer this.

Maria- Yes, yes.

CM- He needs lots of encouragement to compete in a new sport. ONce he gets there he's okay. I try to stress have fun and don't worry about winning.

SWS- I am working my up to a beach that is warm all year. That's the ticket.
He did a great job.

Congrats, proud mama!! When I was his age I used to surf very similar small waves in NJ. One day a hurricane came up the coast and the waves were great. :-)

Outstanding! I have confined my beachcombing to the Great Lakes, where surf can be found, but my little ones prefer to dig and build sand castles :)

Tomcat and Lynn- Yeah. It's just like Jersey. They get a good day every now and again. If they were too big I might not be so encouraging.

Peter- Thanks for the mosaic pics.

Shelly- It was the best. Now its supposed to rain.

Jollyroger- We used to build big old castles.

Pursey- Thanks. I'm longing for another day like this but its gonna rain (which we need) so I'll have to wait.

Sornie- That's what the boards for silly.

How cool, Mary . . .

I was out on the beach briefly this evening-- a quick rehearsal for a marriage I'll be officiating on Sunday. The water, the sand, the misty briny breeze . . . mmmmmm . . .

I loves the beach . . .

Can't wait to get back in the water . . .

October 24 is not that far away . . .
