Darn, I'm on my husband's (work) notebook but I can not 'see' it. I'll have to check it out later this weekend on my own computer. Btw..azgoddess, I've seen that 'handle' before, are you a postcard fairy (pcf'er)?
Anyhow, have a good weekend mary, whatever and where ever you're going to be,

That Alice Neel is quite the character. (smile) I knew of Alice Neel but never gave her much thought. Her portrait gallery has opened my eyes. Thank you very much Mary.

I read this clip and the website as meaning:

Alice Neel was a Bohemian, she was a single mother without a job and OBSESSED with painting to the detriment of her children's lives. (Her son says he hated the Bohemian lifestyle.)

I think the man means, if she lived the role as a married mother and homemaker, living a traditional family manner (of what was expected of women of her time, she was born 1900) she would not have accomplished the wealth and quality of paintings she produced. She suffered and her children suffered for her art.
